The right reaction is never easy when it comes to the fall of a national icon. If the Church of France has until now had to deal with the scandals of sexual violence committed by eminent members of its clergy, it has not yet had to deal with the crimes attributed to a figure truly known to all, revered by the whole of society, believers and atheists. Abbé Pierre is – at least was – one of them. A clergyman who has literally become a personification of mutual aid, charity and fraternity since his call on the 1st February 1954 in favor of the poorly housed.
If it has spoken regularly since the first revelations of the accusations made against Henri Grouès in the summer of 2024, condemning them as they were made public and opening its archives, the Church of France has decided this time to go up a notch. A few days after the publication by the Emmaus movement of a third damning report against its founder, on January 13, the Conference of Bishops of France (CEF) launched an appeal for justice to take up the matter.
