Beat Jans took his pilgrim’s staff to convince Geneva entrepreneurs to hire Ukrainian refugees. In Geneva, the employment rate of people with an S permit stands at 14.3%, half the national average of 29.2%. However, the Confederation’s objectives are clear: to reach a rate of 45% by the end of the year. To achieve this, the Geneva government brought out the heavy artillery: in collaboration with the local branch of the Fédération desentreprises romandes (FER), it invited federal councilor Beat Jans. It was a full house, with around 200 of them responding to the call this Thursday, January 16.
Using metaphors about the Escalade pot, recalling that the local heroine, the Mother Kingdom, was an exiled Lyonnaise, the socialist painted the flattering portrait of a multicultural canton of Geneva, which knew how to open its doors to many refugees. But the latter must continue his efforts. Among the 2,357 Ukrainian refugees of working age, only 336 of them are employed. On this basis, the head of the Federal Department of Justice and Police called on entrepreneurs to go beyond the “a priori” and to hire S permit holders. “The Federal Council wants refugees to acquire jobs as quickly as possible,” he said. -he emphasized. That they accept a position that does not match their profiles or that is part-time. If 60 companies hire six people, Geneva will reach the Swiss average.”
