DECRYPTION – All evangelical Protestant churches in the country are now closed, worries the Open Doors association in its “World Index of Persecution of Christians”.
Worried for years, « the 47 evangelical Christian protestant churches of Algeria are closed or sealed. Pastor Youssef Ourahmane, vice-president of the Protestant Church of Algeria (EPA), was even sentenced on 2 May 2024 to one year in prison for having celebrated “unauthorized” worship »explained Tuesday in Paris, Guillaume Guennec, one of the leaders of the Protestant association Portes Ouvertes, during the presentation of the latest “World Index of Persecution of Christians”, published every year since 1993.
In 2019, Pastor Ourahmane came to Paris to sound the alarm. Since then, things have gotten worse for Algeria's 60,800 evangelical Christians, not counting the 42,900 Pentecostals.
