CF Montreal acquires striker Giacomo Vrioni from New England Revolution

MONTRÉAL – CF Montreal announced Tuesday the acquisition of striker Giacomo Vrioni from the New England Revolution in return for $50,000 in general allocation money (GAM) in 2025. New England will keep a portion of his salary in 2025 and will retain a percentage on a resale of the player. Vrioni will occupy a designated player position.

“We are very pleased to welcome this left-handed striker who is recognized for his quality of finishing and his efficiency in front of goal, both in MLS and in Europe,” declared the president and CEO of CF Montreal, Gabriel Gervais. He is a dynamic player in his movements without the ball, who excels in deep calls behind the defensive line and who creates chances through passing combinations with his teammates. We are confident that he will quickly integrate into the group and our style of play as a central striker in our attacking trident. At just 26 years old, he already has significant experience. »

Born in San Severino Marche, Vrioni grew up in Matelica, Italy. He joined the Revolution in July 2022 from Serie A club Juventus. Vrioni played 67 regular season games, including 41 starts, and 3,806 minutes of play over the last three MLS seasons, scoring a total of 16 goals in addition to three assists. Vrioni also had three goals in four Leagues Cup matches, three goals and two assists in five Concacaf Champions Cup matches and one assist in an MLS Cup playoff match.

A product of the Sampdoria academy, Vrioni began his professional career with Italian club SS Matelica Calcio in 2014. The striker returned to the Sampdoria academy in 2015 where he scored 17 goals in 50 matches for the Primavera , before being loaned to FC Pistoiese in 2017, then in Serie B to Venezia FC in 2018 and to AS Cittadella in 2019.

Vrioni then transferred to Juventus in January 2020, playing mainly with the U23 team. He then left on loan to WSG Tirol, an Austrian Bundesliga team, where he notably won the top scorer trophy in 2021-22 after scoring 19 goals (tied with Karim Adeyemi).

Born to Albanian parents, Vrioni represents Albania at international level. He first played for the Italian U18 and U19 national teams in 2016, before playing for Albania’s under-21 team in 2018. He earned his first cap with the senior national team on October 14 of that same year, against Israel in the UEFA Nations League.
