Death of Joseph “Jef Moestasje” De Ganck, personality of Brussels folklore and famous mustache of the capital

This 60 cm hair, which had once measured up to 1.85 m, was his wife Valérie Franses who took care of it daily, as Jef told DH in 2012, washing it and blow-drying it.

The couple also hit the screen in 2010, when Valérie and her yellow and blue fritkot parked at Jette station became the stars of a documentary filmed by Manuel Poutte. The fry owner affectionately nicknamed her other half with the nickname “bolleke”. She even had a sauce dedicated to him. Remaining cult, the film was broadcast on RTBF. And even on Arte. Since then, the “Friterie Mercier”, renamed “Big Mustache”, has moved a few meters to Place Cardinal Mercier, but the lines continue to grow longer.

As they also risk becoming longer during the funeral of Jef Moestasje, scheduled for Saturday January 11, 2025 at 10 a.m. at the Sint-Bavokerk in Zellik. The editorial staff extends its most sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.
