The FBI has confirmed that the perpetrator of the attack which left at least 10 dead on New Year's Eve in New Orleans was Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old former US soldier. A Daesh flag was found in his vehicle.
The information leaked little by little into the American media before the FBI came to confirm it. The man who drove into a crowd on New Year's Eve in the French Quarter of New Orleans, killing at least 10 people and injuring 35, is Shamsud-Din Jabbar. According to Alethea Duncan, assistant special agent in charge of the FBI field office in the Louisiana capital, he is a 42-year-old man. An American citizen, he is originally from Texas, where he rented the pickup with which he carried out his attack. A Daesh flag was found in the vehicle.
Still according to the FBI, Shamsud-Din Jabbar is a former soldier. “He's an Army veteran, we believe he left the Army on a regular basis, but we're working to get all that information.”continued Alethea Duncan. At this time, investigators believe that Jabbar would not have acted alone to commit what the FBI now describes as“terrorist act“. The authorities are particularly seeking to find out if the man had links with one or more terrorist organizations.
At around 3:15 a.m. local time, Shamsud-Din Jabbar drove his pickup truck into crowds celebrating the New Year on Bourbon Street, killing ten people and injuring several dozen others. After that, he got out of his vehicle and fired at the police, who fired in turn. Jabbar died on the spot while two officers were injured and taken to hospital. “Weapons and a potential explosive device were found in the vehicle. Other potentially explosive homemade devices were also found in the French Quarter.said the investigators.
