The Canadian’s supporters were treated to a rather quiet start to the match from the CH. Indiscipline hurt the Habs in the first period.
About halfway through the first period, Mikko Rantanen opened the scoring on the power play for the Avalanche with a deflection at the mouth of the net. Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar had the assists. MacKinnon is once again having a sensational season. He has 65 points in 39 games and one period. As for Makar, he is also the image of himself with a harvest of 49 points so far this season.
At the end of the first period, CH fans and the organization probably held their breath when Avalanche forward Ross Colton violently came into contact with goaltender Jakub Dobes. Fortunately, more fear than harm for Dobes. Colton received a penalty on the sequence despite Lane Hutson’s push which caused the contact.
The Canadiens players are probably not 100%. The transition game and speed do not seem to be there tonight. However, it is not surprising since the Canadian is playing a second game in less than 24 hours while the Avalanche was off last night. This is also CH’s last match in this long, grueling road trip.
If Martin St-Louis’ squad manages to regain its play from the last few games and obtain the victory, the team could join the Ottawa Senators for the last place reaching the playoffs in the Eastern association. CH has a record of 17 wins, 18 losses and 3 overtime losses so far.
