“Coastal flooding possible”: storm surge warnings in Quebec and Saguenay

Storm surge warnings for Quebec and Saguenay were issued by Environment Canada on Wednesday, with rain or snow expected across the province during the day.

Higher than normal water levels are therefore expected in the St. Lawrence River near the Capitale-Nationale and in the Saguenay River, near Saguenay.

“Coastal flooding is possible along the coastline,” indicates Environment Canada on its website. Coastal erosion is possible in risk areas.”

Strong winds from the east, a low to moderate storm surge and a high tide are behind this warning published around 11:30 a.m. by the federal agency.

Snow mixed with rain is expected until 5 p.m. in Quebec and Montreal with snow thereafter, while snow will fall in Saguenay throughout the day.

The mercury is expected to hover around 1 degree Celsius in these three cities.

Environment Canada has also issued a snow warning for the Laurentides Wildlife Reserve, Saguenay and Charlevoix regions.

Between 15 and 20 centimeters of snow are expected until next night.

“The rapid accumulation of snow could make travel difficult in certain places,” it said. Visibility can be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.”

A similar snow warning has also been issued for the Granby, Brome and Mont-Orford sectors for next night until Thursday evening.
