King Mohamed VI was represented at the inauguration of the elected President of Ghana, which coincided with the announcement of the severance of his relations with the self-proclaimed SADR of the Polisario Front, a victory for Morocco’s territorial integrity in the Sahara.

Moroccan Parliament Speaker Rachid Talbi Alami represented King Mohammed VI at the inauguration ceremony of Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday, marking an important day that also saw Ghana announce its suspension of relations with the self-proclaimed SADR Front Polisario.

The Moroccan delegation included Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and Moroccan Ambassador to Ghana Imane Ouadil, joining other heads of state, government officials and political figures at the ceremony in Accra.

Mahama, 65, took office for his third term as president of Ghana, following his victory in December elections.

The former communications minister had previously served as president from July 2012 to January 2017, first taking on the role after the death of President John Evans Atta Mills before winning the 2012 elections.

Coinciding with the inauguration, the Ghanaian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration officially communicated to Morocco its decision to suspend its relations with the self-proclaimed Polisario Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), which it had recognized since 1979.

The West African nation has expressed its support for all efforts aimed at reaching a solution acceptable to all parties to the Sahara conflict.

Ghana is the latest African country to review its position on the Sahara. According to the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 46 countries, including 13 African, have suspended or severed their relations with the Polisario since 2000.

This development follows similar initiatives taken by Ecuador and Panama in recent months, with more than 100 countries now supporting Morocco’s autonomy plan as the most credible solution to resolve the regional conflict.

The inauguration took place as Ghana faces significant economic challenges. Mahama has pledged to resolve the country’s worst economic crisis in a generation, fight corruption and implement his campaign promise of a 24-hour economy to boost employment.
