It’s not common to see Latvia win games at the World Junior Hockey Championship, let alone make the quarter-finals, and one of the country’s most prominent players has taken note.

Following the national team’s victory over Germany on Monday, Columbus Blue Jackets goalie Elvis Merzlikins rewarded all members of the team in a delicious way. Thus, everyone was entitled to a free dinner at Merzlikins’ favorite restaurant in Ottawa, the city where the tournament is taking place. Obviously, it was he who assumed the entire bill which must have been rather hefty.
“It was unreal,” said club captain Peteris Bulans, as reported by the TSN network. He spoke to us via FaceTime and delivered a speech. It was very motivating.”
On Tuesday, the Latvians were due to conclude the preliminary round by facing Finland.
