Freedom of expression and demonstration, rights of women and minorities, upcoming organization of elections… The new leader of Syria, Ahmad al-Chareh gave an interview, Sunday December 29, 2024, to the al-Arabiya channel . The new Syrian strongman put economic issues at the top of the interim government's priorities and estimated that Syrians would feel the results of change within a year.
“What matters to me is that the Syrian people believe me. We promised the people to free them from this criminal regime and we did it. As for the details regarding rights and freedoms, they must be included in the Constitution and not be someone's personal opinion”, declared Ahmed al-Chareh, who announced that a new Constitution will be created within three years, and that new elections will be held within four years.
He also sent several messages abroad. The first aimed to reassure neighboring countries, including Israel, that the country would not be targeted or involved in conflict with Syria. The second was an invitation addressed to the countries directly involved in the Syrian crisis: Russia and Iran. The Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Military Operations Administration asks them to respect the will of the Syrians and not interfere in their internal affairs.
“I think that Israel's intervention in Syria and the airstrikes were justified by the Iranian presence in Syria. But today it is in the past, because we managed to drive Iran and Hezbollah out of Syria “continued Ahmad al-Chareh.
Finally, Al-Chareh urged the next President of the United States, Donald Trump, not to follow the policies of the previous administration. He called for supporting Syrians in the reconstruction of their country, in particular by lifting the economic sanctions imposed on Syria.
