Known for his very diverse work and his research on material, color and technique, Aziz Tounsi touched on several currents.
Cet painter self-taught, who explored plastic art from the age of 7, made the earth, Man, beauty and identity fields of research as well as sources of inspiration. His creations, mixing colors, materials, shapes and lights, highlight the richness of his talent and the delicacy of his artistic touch.
According to Nadia Rhassalart critic, Aziz Tounsi “establishes himself as a singular voice of contemporary Moroccan art”.
His paintings, built around familiar objects such as the oil can, the sewing machine or the lantern, go well beyond their utilitarian function. Rhassal specifies: “These elements, meticulously integrated, serve as bridges between the everyday and the timeless, weaving stories loaded with collective memory and symbolism.”
Another key aspect of Tounsi’s work is his mastery of chiaroscuro. “One of Tounsi’s strengths lies in his mastery of chiaroscuro, a technique he uses to sculpt volumes and create tension between light and shadow. Light, far from being limited to an illustrative function, becomes a main actor, revealing fragments of stories while leaving others in suggestive darkness,” specifies the art critic.
Tounsi’s creations question the human being’s relationship to life and existence, exploring the deep connections between the individual and their environment. The textures of his works are not left to chance. For Rhassal: “The surfaces, sometimes smooth, sometimes rough, demonstrate a considered materiality, where each brushstroke or addition of material seems deliberate. These textural choices amplify the presence of the objects represented, anchoring them in a tangible reality while elevating them to the rank of universal metaphors. Aziz Tounsi’s works go well beyond their aesthetic dimension by establishing a subtle dialogue between the local and the universal. While drawing their essence from a Morocco deeply rooted in its traditions, they open up to universal reflections on identity, resilience and intergenerational links. Far from simply telling stories, they suggest, question and encourage the viewer to recreate their own stories. In this balance between past and present, between simplicity and complexity, Aziz Tounsi transcends aesthetic research to offer an authentic and deeply human exploration. In “Creative Inspirations”, Aziz Tounsi shares the space of expression with talented artists such as Tahar Berdi, Mohamed Rhoulami, Rajaa Daila, Rachid Chraïbi, Aziz Elfihri Elfassi and Aziz Dadsi. This exhibition, which combines unique artistic universes, offers the public a rich panorama of contemporary Moroccan creation. An invitation to explore complementary visions where each work dialogues with the others to celebrate the diversity of artistic expression and the universality of human emotions.
