On December 27, the UN Security Council gave the green light to the creation of a new African Union mission in Somalia, called AUSSOM. This mission will replace the previous one, ATMIS (African Union Transitional Mission in Somalia), and marks a turning point in the management of the country’s national security. AUSSOM’s main objective is to support the Somali security forces in their fight against terrorist groups such as Al-Shabaab and Da’esh (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant). The transition to an African Union-led mission is part of a broader plan to gradually transfer security responsibilities to the Somali government. Juan Ramón de la Fuente, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of the African Union, stressed that this new mission will maintain international support while strengthening the capacity of Somali forces to protect their country. AUSSOM will be made up of more than 12,600 uniformed personnel, including police officers, and will be deployed until June 30, 2025. This mission is expected to play a crucial role in stabilizing the country, particularly in the face of persistent terrorist threats. With the commitment of the African Union and the support of the United Nations, Somalia hopes to strengthen its control over its territory and improve security for its citizens, while assuming increasing responsibilities for national defense.
