The Montreal Alouettes obtained American quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson from the Edmonton Elks in exchange for quarterback Cody Fajardo on Tuesday.
Bethel-Thompson could become a free agent on February 11.
The 6’4”, 236 lb player has accumulated 3,748 passing yards and 24 touchdown passes, second in the league in 16 games with the Edmonton Elks in 2024.
“McLeod is a veteran in the CFL, he could be an excellent insurance policy for our team,” said Danny Maciocia, general manager of the Als.

Bethel-Thompson joined the Elks in 2024 after playing with the New Orleans Breakers in the United States Football League (USFL) in 2023. He led the league with 2,433 passing yards. In 10 games, he threw 10 touchdown passes.
The Sacramento State product spent five seasons with the Toronto Argonauts (2017-2019, 2021-2022), totaling 13,261 yards and 70 touchdowns in 74 games, including 46 as a starter.McLeod Bethel-Thompson
He had his best season when he led the Argonauts to a championship in 2022 in the 109th Gray Cup. The quarterback finished the season leading the CFL with 4,731 passing yards and 23 majors.
He also won the Gray Cup in 2017.
