Infrastructure constitutes one of the priority axes of Morocco’s development, under the wise leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, affirmed the Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch. During the monthly plenary session at the House of Representatives, Mr. Akhannouch highlighted the strategic importance of major projects carried out to guarantee balanced and inclusive growth.
Under the reign of HM the King, Morocco established itself as a model in Africa. The country now occupies 1st place in Africa in terms of infrastructure, according to the African Governance Index 2024. This performance is the result of 25 years of progress marked by the extension of highways to 1,800 km, a dense road network of 58,000 km, and major advances in the rail, airport and port sectors.
In the road sector, the flagship Tiznit-Dakhla project, 1,055 km long, will boost the southern provinces with an investment of 8.8 billion dirhams. Major projects such as the tripling of the Casablanca-Berrechid axis and the construction of the Rabat-Casablanca highway for 6 billion dirhams are part of this dynamic of strengthening national connectivity.
The railway sector benefits from an ambitious vision with the extension of the high-speed line (LGV) to Marrakech over 430 km, at a cost of 53 billion dirhams. A future extension from Marrakech to Agadir is also planned, connecting economic centers to stimulate commercial and tourist exchanges.
In the air, Morocco’s airport capacity will be doubled to reach 80 million passengers by 2030. Major work is being carried out at the airports of Casablanca, Marrakech, Agadir and Rabat-Salé, in preparation for the World Cup 2030, a major event for the international attractiveness of the Kingdom. Moroccan air traffic has already reached 27.1 million passengers in 2023, a figure that is rising sharply.
Finally, maritime transport is experiencing significant growth, with the construction of new ports such as Nador West Med and Dakhla Atlantique, for respective investments of 11.56 and 13 billion dirhams.
