If you have a Netflix subscription, be careful. A vast phishing campaign, which consists of stealing a person's personal information by indirect means, is currently circulating. Scammers impersonate global streaming giant, reports Begeek.
It was a report from Bitdefender, a company specializing in cybersecurity, which brought the scam to light. Netflix subscribers in no fewer than 23 countries are targeted, including France, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Greece, Australia and the United Kingdom.
A classic data theft
The scam itself is pretty basic. It takes the form of an SMS allegedly from Netflix warning victims that they have not paid for their subscription and that their account will soon be suspended. To remedy this, they are invited to click on a link given in the SMS.
This link takes you to a page where the person's personal information, login credentials and banking details are requested. Once this information is obtained, scammers can then use it to empty bank accounts, steal people's identities or even sell the data on the dark net.
Begeek reminds that Netflix never communicates by SMS with its customers. If in doubt or when you receive communication from the streaming platform, it is recommended to log in directly to your account to verify your information or contact customer service through official channels.
