The video game Rocket League brought together students from several schools across the province at McInthyre College in the Winnipeg School Division on Saturday for the fall provincial final. This event allows schools to include electronic sports and the world of fun video in an educational approach.
More than 200 participating players took control of cars and must push a giant soccer ball into the opposing team’s goal.
For the coach of the Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau College team, Brad Bamforth, electronic sports is beneficial to academic learning.
There are many students in schools who don’t have spots on the basketball, soccer or hockey team and so this is a great way to bond with the school. And when they are attached to school, they commit to their studies
believes Mr. Bamforth.
The principal of McIntyre College, Melody Woloshuk, welcomes the students’ commitment and believes that this discipline will provide them with future opportunities.
We know that there are several college career opportunities in eSports and we have demonstrated this.

Nazar Popov, 16, a 12th grade student at Collège Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau, did not hide his interest by participating in the competition.
“We won a [match] and we lost two, so we are in the play-offs, and we will try to win,” he said.
The winners of this final will have to compete against other players in a national competition bringing together the other provinces.
