The landslide occurred in the villages of Nkubi and Kanenge during the night from Friday to Saturday during heavy rains. Witnesses affirm that the ground and the houses built of clay or wood did not resist the pressure of the water currents coming from the Nyabibwe hills.
Red Cross rescuers and young volunteers began searching to find the victims, helped by machines from the Congolese army.
“Until Saturday evening, around ten bodies were found and houses damaged,” specifies Delphin Birimbi, president of the Kalehe civil society consultation framework. The search could continue this Sunday, he assures.
This tragedy occurs while the inhabitants of the Kalehe territory still remember the floods which cost the lives of more than 450 people and thousands of people disappeared in 2023 in the villages of Bushushu and Nyamukubi. All access roads to the area have remained closed since then.
The administrator of Kalehe, Thomas Bakenga, deplores this new tragedy. And requires special attention to this territory.
