“It is an inevitable period for women, which occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. We can have situations of early menopause, sometimes a little later. Vevey gynecologist Katyuska Francini discusses the natural phenomenon of pre-menopause: it is the transition period which precedes menopause which can last from 2 to 4 years. Period which can be accompanied by various uncomfortable symptoms: hot flashes, mood swings, reduced libido, etc.

However, support solutions, often unknown, are put in place. “We are lucky to have a specialized center in Lausanne and a center in Geneva which specifically do gynecological endocrinology,” explains the gynecologist. In addition to sufficient exposure to the sun, to produce vitamin D, and regular physical activity, a hormone replacement treatment exists: THM. Its principle: to replace two hormones (estrogen and progesterone) whose natural production has ceased. Prescribed by a doctor and taken orally, it reduces hot flashes, genital disorders and even bone loss. Follow-up by a specialist remains essential. At least 20 to 25% of affected women suffer from severe disorders that affect their quality of life.
