Qualcomm is beginning phase 2 of its program of gradual invasion of the laptop PC market. After attacking, with a certain ferocity, AMD and Intel in the mid- and high-end segments simultaneously, the firm now has the ambition to also establish itself on much more affordable machines.

As part of its 2024 Investor Day, the American giant clarified certain points of its new roadmap. A roadmap marked by growth and diversification (one rarely goes without the other).

By 2029, Qualcomm predicts, for example, that 30 to 50% of PCs sold will no longer be based on the x86 architecture, but on the ARM design: that used by its Snapdragon X Plus and X Elite processors, now well established on the laptop market. This architecture would then represent 4 billion dollars in revenue according to the company, which intends to eat a large part of it.

Snapdragon X chips soon on PCs for less than 700 euros

As mentioned above, Qualcomm has for the moment focused on the marketing of its Snapdragon this time in the mid-range, on PCs available from 900 euros in our latitudes).

The next step will therefore be the launch of new references, this time intended for the entry level. With them, Qualcomm wants to venture into portable PCs marketed from 600 dollars across the Atlantic (probably around 700 euros here).

The idea would then be, very logically, to offer a chip capable of responding to each range of PCs. With its various solutions, the firm plans to be able to meet 70% of the needs on the Windows laptop PC market. It also promises that more than 100 laptop models will be equipped with its Snapdragon X by 2026. Faced with AMD and Intel, the breakthrough would then be even more notable.

Starting next year, Qualcomm should also introduce a new batch of Snapdragon X Plus / X Elite processors based on 3rd generation Oryon CPU cores. The latter will be responsible for offering a significant generational leap, both in terms of performance and energy efficiency.
