The implementation of the new Vaud car tax was done without apparent pain, on 1is January 2024. It is on this date that the new cantonal law came into force.
“TCS Vaud has not been contacted by vehicle owners upset by a sharp increase in their car tax since it came into force,” notes the press officer of the Vaud section of the Touring Club Suisse, Hélène Isoz.
The new tax project, which is part of the fight against CO emissions2was put out for consultation in 2020. After a change in government majority from left to right in 2022, the project followed its parliamentary path under the threat of a UDC referendum. This was ultimately not launched.
Criticisms from all sides
Adopted by the Grand Council in 2023, the new tax was criticized by the Vaud section of the Transport and Environment Association (ATE Vaud), when the implementing regulations were published a year ago: while a 50% increase for the most polluting vehicles was legally possible, the government limited it to 25%. ATE Vaud denounced a refusal to fight against the “SUVerization” of the vehicle fleet.
In addition, people with reduced mobility who own adapted vehicles have been insufficiently informed, lamented UDC MP Céline Baux in a question to the government. Since 1is January 2024, the latter only pay half of the tax, regardless of their financial situation. Previously, these people had to demonstrate that they were in a precarious financial situation to obtain this exemption.
In addition, deplores the elected representative of Pays-d’Enhaut, people already beneficiaries before the revision of the law must again request to be recognized as such to benefit from this measure from the submission of the request, but without retroactivity. The Council of State partially agreed with him by strengthening the information, but maintained the non-retroactivity of the new exemption.
