4 weeks of promotion

In France, the sales period runs from June 26 to July 23. But if the duration is invariable: four weeks, the dates differ in the departments of Corsica and Overseas, recalls service-public.fr. On the island of beauty, the promotion period will begin on July 10 and end on August 6. In Reunion, good deals will emerge from September 7, compared to September 28 in Guadeloupe or October 3 in Martinique for example.

An average budget of 307 euros

According to the OpinionWay study for June 2024, the French are planning an average budget of 307 euros this year for summer sales. An amount lower than the 362 euros devoted to this same period in 2023.
During this period, clothing will be the most sought after (68%) followed by children’s items (28%), household appliances (27%) and finally, leisure items (20%) and decoration (20% ).

Beware of fake bargains

Brands are required to clearly display the discounts granted, compared to the reference price. If in doubt about the amount of the discount (or that of the initial price), do not hesitate to compare before buying. Indeed, some unscrupulous traders do not hesitate to display an incorrect starting price to make people believe they are good deals.

The seller can only sell products offered for sale for at least 1 month before the start of the sales period, specifies the Public Service site. Promotions can apply to new items, but also to used goods.

On the other hand, sale and non-sale items must be separated to avoid any confusion.

Be careful on the internet

E-commerce brands are subject to the same obligations as physical stores. Preferably choose recognized and trusted sites. But if you think you have spotted THE good deal on a little-known site, be careful before making your purchase. If you have any doubts about the seriousness of the merchant (questionable spelling, unsecured connection – the start of the internet address begins with http instead of https –, absence of the padlock icon in the address bar), do not hesitate not to check the reputation on the site franceverif.fr.

On social networks, the Hérault gendarmerie reminds consumers with humor of some precautionary measures to apply when shopping online.

Consumer rights

If the product has an identified hidden defect, you can ask the seller to replace or refund the purchased product. In the absence of a hidden defect or lack of conformity, the seller is however not legally required to proceed with the exchange or refund, but may do so for purely commercial purposes, specifies the Service public website.

Distance selling businesses must apply the same rules. Whether the item is purchased on sale or not, the consumer can return the product to the seller for exchange or refund, without any penalty, within 14 days of delivery.
