Faded by legislative aberrations, the city of flowers seems to have lost its shine. Faced with insensitive views of the city’s deterioration, Mohammedia is sinking into an economic and social slump. The Council of the local section of the Federation of the Democratic Left (FGD) met this Sunday, November 17, 2024 to analyze the worrying situation the municipality is going through and call for urgent actions to get out of it. During this meeting, a damning observation was made about the economic, social and environmental state of the city.
In this sense, the FGD accuses the municipal council, and more particularly its president, of not fulfilling the responsibilities incumbent on it according to law 113.14 on local authorities. The repeated absences of the president of the commune and his neglect of local affairs are pointed out as major factors in this deterioration.
“The president has failed in his mission to serve citizens and defend their interests. It is urgent that the competent authorities initiate dismissal proceedings to save what can still be saved.”declares the Council of the local FGD section. The Federation believes that Mohammedia is going through real abandonment, where the absence of vision and management seriously compromises its future.
A city on its last legs. Despite its strategic location and its proximity to the Casablanca metropolis, the economic situation of Mohammedia leaves something to be desired. “Once a thriving industrial center, Mohammedia saw its economic pillars collapse with the closure of renowned companies such as Samir, Koutoubia, Biscuiterie BZK and Ikoma. These closures have led to a skyrocketing unemployment rate, plunging thousands of families into uncertainty and precariousness.”, deplore the members of the FGD.
On a social level, the situation is just as worrying. Essential public services, including health, education, transport and sanitation, are in an advanced state of disrepair. Degraded roads, poor public lighting and insufficient sports and cultural infrastructure aggravate residents’ frustrations.
The environmental aspect is not spared. The city is overrun by animal-drawn carts, stray dogs and cats, and illegal construction that devours green spaces and coastal areas. Added to this are recurring fires in parks and poor waste management.
Faced with this extremely worrying situation, the FGD presents a global and integrated development plan, focused on several strategic priorities: Revival of the local economy seems an increased priority. This involves resuming industrial activities in key companies like Samir and Koutoubia, but also through the creation of new industrial zones to attract investments and generate jobs.
Moreover, the Federation is calling for the creation of a bus station, the connection of the city to the tram network and the rehabilitation of roads and public transport. Wastewater treatment to irrigate green spaces is proposed as a sustainable solution to beautify the city and improve the quality of life of residents.
Aware of the issues facing the city’s residents, the FGD is demanding a fair redistribution of vacant housing, in particular the 100 apartments built by Samir, as well as a social housing program adapted to the most deprived families.
Not only that, the FGD also highlights the resilience of its advisors within the municipal council, who continue to defend the interests of citizens despite the obstacles.
She appeals to residents, associations and stakeholders to join forces and coordinate their efforts to save the city. “ Mohammedia can’t wait any longer. It is time to break with inertia and build a collective vision to restore the city to its greatness and prosperity“, affirms the FGD.
