Shanghai, Tokyo, New York, Houston and Seoul are the cities that have emitted the most greenhouse gases in 2023 according to a ranking unveiled on Friday by Climate Trace, an independent organization, on the sidelines of COP 29 which is taking place. held in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Note that these are the most polluting cities and not the most polluted which are the cities where the air quality index is the worst, specifies BFMTV.

Based on the ranking, the French media reports that the city of Shanghai alone produced 256 million tonnes of greenhouse gases, more than a country like Colombia or Norway.

Tokyo, with its 250 million tonnes of emissions, would even rank among the 40 most emitting countries, underlines the same source adding that the cities of New York and Houston would rank in the top 50 emitting countries with their 160 million tonnes of greenhouse gases.

The organization quantified carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and other traditional air pollutants around the world, including for the first time in more than 9,000 urban areas, BFM said.

China, India, Iran, Indonesia and Russia are the countries with the largest increases in emissions from 2022 to 2023, while Venezuela, Japan, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States recorded the largest declines, reports the same source.

Globally, greenhouse gas emissions increased by 0.7% between 2022 (60.7 billion tonnes) and 2023 (61.2 billion tonnes) and are already even higher in 2024 with 61 .44 billion tonnes already emitted in mid-November according to Climate Trace.
