At just 21 years old, Antonio Djakovic can already boast an impressive track record. Silver medalist in the 200m freestyle and 400m freestyle at the previous European Championships, in 2022 in Rome, the Thurgauian achieved a new double in these two specialties in Belgrade, where the 2024 edition is taking place. Three days after won bronze in 200m freestylehe did it again in the 400m freestyle this Sunday.

3rd in the qualifying heats in 3’49”99, Djakovic held his place in the final. In the lead after 50 meters, he oscillated between 3rd and 2nd row until approaching the last round trip. Demoted to 5th position before the final straight, he took a definitive place on the podium thanks to a supersonic finish, completing his race in 3’47”62.

No Olympic qualification for Jérémy Desplanches

A few minutes earlier, her younger sister Vanna (18 years old) took part in her first international final among adults, in the 400m freestyle. Last qualified at the end of the morning series, with the eighth time (4’17”46), she swam in 4’15”32 on Sunday evening. A new personal best which allowed him to rank 6th. A successful baptism of fire.

It’s less of a party time for Jérémy Desplanches. The 29-year-old from Geneva did not manage to reach the minimum requirements to validate his qualification for the Paris Olympic Games in the 200m medley. It was necessary to achieve a time of 1’57”94 and Desplanches remained far behind: 8th in the playoffs in 2’01”32 then 5th in the semi-finals in 1’59”27, he completed the final in 1’59”04. A brand synonymous with 5th place.

“I am very disappointed and at the same time I have no regrets,” he commented after leaving the pool. I did everything I could. This qualifying time is so hard… It was my last 200m medley, I’m disappointed not to be able to compete in it in Paris but you have to be realistic: I couldn’t have done better there.

Historical Swiss assessment

The one who won the gold medal at the 2018 Europeans then silver at the 2019 Worlds and bronze at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 will have to be content with the team race in the French capital.

His frustration somewhat attenuates the formidable Swiss record in Belgrade. With five charms on the clock (four in bronze, one in silver), Switzerland did even better than in Rome two years earlier, where it had achieved the best harvest in its history in the competition (a gold medal and three silver).
