The strong man of the socialists, Conner Rousseau, suggested last week that there was “little chance” that they would enter the new federal executive.

The former president of Vooruit then said: “if it’s to save money on health care, you shouldn’t even call us.” However, this element is not only defended by Vooruit. The Engagés and the CD&V have also made it their hobby horse.

On Wednesday, Vooruit announced that it was ready to negotiate to form a Flemish government with the N-VA and the CD&V. The Flemish socialists now seem inclined to the same exercise at the federal level, with also MR and Engagés on the French-speaking side. “Is this an obvious composition? No. The differences between parties are quite significant, in terms of content. But I think we should still try,” says Melissa Depraetere.

“The focus must be on strengthening purchasing power and we are not going to save on health care. This must be clear from the start,” she adds. “We are going to put forward some priorities. Perhaps each party must do this: advance a few points, and concede elsewhere. So it will work, I think.” The fact that the PS chose the opposition does not make Vooruit’s task easier, but Melissa Depraetere considers the choice of the French-speaking socialists “courageous”.

Finally, who for the 16th? “I prefer anyone, rather than Bouchez. He put a spoke in the wheels of Vivaldi for 4 years, I have not forgotten him.”
