UNITED STATES – As in 2020, the 2024 American presidential election was played out in a handful of particularly contested states, the famous “swing states”, or States “keys” or « pivots » in French. Seven in number, they were all won by Donald Trump, sometimes very narrowly as predicted by the very last polls before the November 5 election.
After a count of votes sent by mail which lasted several days for Arizona, Donald Trump officially ratified his Grand Slam on the “swing states” this Sunday, November 10, therefore putting his hands on the last state to attribute the election. In this race for the White House, the president-elect won a total of 312 voters, compared to 226 for Kamala Harris.
• Pennsylvania – 19 electoral votes
After 99% of the count, Donald Trump won 50.5% of the votes, compared to 48.4% for his Democratic opponent.
This was clearly the most coveted stronghold of this election. Blue-collar workers from this northeastern state, which has experienced great industrial decline, had left the Democratic ship to join Donald Trump. But Kamala Harris intended to win back part of it thanks to the major infrastructure projects launched by Joe Biden, job creators, and the support of unions. Donald Trump won by a narrow margin in 2016 and Joe Biden came close in 2020.
• Michigan – 15 electoral votes
This other Democratic stronghold, marked by deindustrialization, switched to Donald Trump in 2016 to everyone's surprise, before being taken over by Joe Biden in 2020.
This year, Donald Trump is back on top with a score of 49.7%, compared to 48.3% for Kamala Harris, after a 99% count.
• Wisconsin – 10 electoral votes
Here again, the north-central state was lost by the Democrats in 2016 and regained in 2020. Donald Trump returned it to the Republican fold in 2024 by gathering 49.7% of the votes, compared to 48.8% for his opponent as the counting draws to a close.
The Republicans, whose party was born in this state, organized their major national convention there in July, in Milwaukee.
• Georgia – 16 electoral votes
In the wake of major anti-racist movements, this conservative state with a large African-American population (around 30% of the electorate) preferred Democrat Joe Biden in 2020.
This year, Donald Trump, who was able to count on the fairly substantial religious electorate in this state, received 50.7% of the votes, compared to 48.5% for Kamala Harris on 99% of the ballots counted.
• North Carolina – 16 electors
It was the only one of the seven “swing states” of 2024 to have voted Republican in 2020. The state had not voted Democratic since 2008 but has elected a Democratic governor since 2017. On November 5, Donald Trump l won with a score of 51% against 47.7% for its rival.
• Nevada – 6 electoral votes
The least populated of the “swing states”, known for the casinos of Las Vegas, had not voted for a Republican since George Bush in 2004. But the conservatives made the switch this year, relying in particular on the Latino population -American, which is increasingly breaking away from the Democratic fold, especially men.
While the counting is almost complete, Donald Trump has collected nearly 51% of the votes, compared to just over 47% for the Democratic candidate, who is approximately 50,000 votes behind.
• Arizona – 11 electoral votes
Rather Republican land, this southwestern state created a surprise in 2020 by choosing Joe Biden down to the wire, with 10,457 votes in advance.
But the theme of illegal immigration, hammered out by the Republican candidate in increasingly harsh terms, struck a chord in this state bordering Mexico, despite the large number of Latin Americans.
