Big increase in the number of cases for theft and extortion in just two years: here’s what explains it

Justice has more and more work, if we are to believe the latest statistics published by the public prosecutor. The number of cases that have been received by the criminal justice system has increased significantly in recent years

Theft and extortion

Pickpockets, shoplifting or theft from cars, burglaries and racketeering… These cases for theft have increased significantly in a short time, in two years. Between 2021 and 2023, the increase is 20%, which is not negligible.

How to explain it? Maybe because the pandemic ended just before then. If we go back in time and look from 2019, we first see a drop of 28% in these files. The pandemic takes place in this part of the timeline and so we think that the thieves were blocked, cornered by measures like lockdowns. But ultimately, we also see that they have returned to service since then.

Indecent assaults

This concerns certain types of sexual assault or even rape. There were 11,200 new files in 2023, or 41% more in 10 years.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that there are more attacks today. This means that we identify them better, that victims also file complaints more easily today, even if it is still very difficult.

Minors at risk

113,000 new files were opened last year, which is 49% more than 10 years ago. Neglect, mistreatment, abuse, running away,… girls are affected like boys, it’s pretty much the same, especially among 6-12 year olds.

If we take all types of criminal case files, even categories not mentioned, there were 572,000 criminal cases received by the ministry last year, or 26% more than in 2014.
