Attention grill lovers. The right evening to take out the grill and chill a bottle of rosé is Tuesday. After the persistent gray weather, a “hot spell” is predicted in the coming days.

“There will be a fairly marked rise in temperatures at the start of the week,” explains Nicolas Borgognon to MeteoNews. Milder air arrives during the days of Monday and Tuesday. We owe it to a depression which will move closer to Portugal and which will bring up very hot air from the Maghreb.

Summer days

The result of this favorable development is “temperatures which are approaching 30 degrees, particularly in Valais and Basel”. Tuesday promises to be the most beautiful day of the week, even if you have to expect a few sails and a little sand from the Sahara.

The Swiss can therefore hope for three or four summer days this week, while waiting for the next stormy front, which should arrive in our region on Thursday evening, before the situation improves again next weekend.

Lack of sun

At this stage, the anticyclone still fails to settle in, and the month of June confirms its reputation as a traditionally wet period. “It is indeed one of the months of the year where we record the most rain, after the autumn months,” confirms Nicolas Borgognon.

More than storms and lower than average temperatures, the meteorologist highlights the importance of the “lack of sunshine”. Switzerland has indeed been living in gray conditions since January. “In 2023, we were able to count on a very beautiful month of February. This was not the case this year, and we have not benefited from anticyclone since mid-October 2023.

In 2024, “there were very few days where the temperature exceeded 25 degrees, whereas, two years ago, in 2022, sunny and warm days lined up from the start of the month of May,” recalls Nicolas Borgognon. “And during the famous summer of 2003, every day of June experienced maximum temperatures above 25 degrees in Geneva.”

Where is the high pressure?

“This lack of sunshine is what weighs on people’s morale. However, since the start of the year, it has been close to 30% on average in French-speaking Switzerland.” It is therefore the lack of sunshine which characterizes this year 2024, and not just the repeated rain.

The good news is that the famous Azores anticyclone, which promises beautiful sunny days, will soon attempt an offensive to settle in. He should be at the gates of Switzerland next week.

“The evolution is not yet clear, but it is possible that it will finally bring us a few summer days, without excess, with sunshine and temperatures between 25 and 28 degrees for the last week of June.” To be confirmed in the coming days.
