Like father, like son. In the history of the France team, Lilian Thuram has long been one of the only players to risk talking about politics; and his acerbic responses, in 2006, to the National Front and its president at the time, Jean-Marie Le Pen, had left their mark. His son, Marcus, is in turn a member of this restricted circle. Saturday June 15, the 26-year-old striker – who will play the first match for the France team at Euro 2024 against Austria on Monday – delivered, bluntly, his opinion on the current political situation in the country and on the legislative elections of June 7 and July 30.

His presence at the press conference was eagerly awaited, after several days during which the players of the French selection had been successively questioned about their position regarding the dissolution of the National Assembly and the legislative elections. After timid responses, Ousmane Dembélé was the first, on Thursday, to call on the French to vote. The Paris Saint-Germain winger was imitated on Friday by Olivier Giroud and Benjamin Pavard, who succinctly encouraged their compatriots to go to the polls on June 30 and July 7.

Marcus Thuram’s analysis, “made aware from [son] younger age through commitment » of his father, particularly invested in issues of anti-racism, promised to be richer. She was: “The situation is sad, it is very serious. Messages are conveyed every day to help this party pass. Everyone needs to go and vote. And as a citizen, we must fight on a daily basis so that the National Rally does not happen and this type of situation does not happen again,” hammered the Inter Milan striker.

For the first time in his career, Marcus Thuram should start a competition with the France team as a starter. Two days before the match against Austria, the press conference therefore oscillated between questions relating to his new status with the Blues and others on the political situation, while a day of anti-National Rally (RN) mobilization ) is planned for Saturday in several cities in France.

“Certain debates are held to raise the RN”

More comfortable than some of his teammates in discussing this potential arrival of Marine Le Pen’s party in power after the legislative elections, Marcus Thuram said he felt ” responsible “as a high-level athlete, “to keep this type of message”. “It is not enough to call for a vote, we must explain how we got here and explain the seriousness of the situation”specified the attacker, for whom “certain debates, on programs that I will not mention, are designed to raise the RN”.
