In Linguère, Ousmane Sonko addresses the modernization of agriculture and livestock

Ousmane Sonko, head of the national list of the Pastef party in the legislative elections of November 17, addressed the modernization of the agricultural and livestock sectors to achieve the objectives of self-sufficiency in milk and meat.

“We must encourage breeders to adopt intensive breeding and stabilize livestock in suitable areas,” says Ousmane Sonko, adding that “this model could transform the local economic landscape.”

”Currently, the state spends billions to import milk and pay for seeds. There is a lack of resources to feed livestock and roads are lacking in the department of Linguère, preventing the flow of agricultural products due to the isolation of certain areas,” he declared during a meeting in Dahra Djoloff, Friday.

In this predominantly silvopastoral area, where agriculture and livestock occupy an essential place in the local economy, professionals in the sector believe that “the modernization of these activities is necessary to ensure food self-sufficiency in dairy products and meat”.

The leader of Pastef also clarified that “this modernization of agriculture should not threaten pastoralism, in particular agropastoralism”, which he considers to be a “key component of the rural economy”. ”Agropastoralism is one of the pillars of the dynamism of agriculture and livestock breeding in Senegal,” he underlined.

Also, Ousmane Sonko mentioned the program of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, which plans “significant investments in road infrastructure, the creation of dairy processing factories, tanneries, and modern slaughterhouses in order to strengthen local production and reduce dependence on imports”.

”This plan aims to sustainably improve the agriculture and livestock sectors to meet Senegal’s growing food needs,” he said.
