As a signal as the Tour de France approaches: Adam Yates and the UAE team disgusted the competition at the top of the Col de Cari, finish of the 5th stage of the Tour de Suisse, on Thursday.

The Briton beat his Portuguese teammate Joao Almeida to consolidate his position as leader of a race which demonstrates that the UAE team of Tadej Pogacar, absent from this Tour de Suisse, is in good working order for the Grande Boucle in July next.

After colossal work from Almeida in the final climb of almost ten kilometers, Yates placed a first attack a little less than two kilometers from the line then a second, decisive, after the red flame.

Only Almeida managed to limit the damage. The two men, who will be Pogacar’s lieutenants at the start of the Tour on June 29 in Florence, should compete for the final victory during the time trial which will close the Tour de Suisse on Sunday in Aigle in front of the Union headquarters international cyclist (UCI). Thirty-five seconds separate them.

Badilatti best Switzerland

The 31-year-old Briton suffered a serious setback when he suffered a concussion after a violent fall at the UAE Tour in February. But his current form confirms that he will indeed be Tadej Pogacar’s right-hand man at the next Tour de France, the Slovenian’s declared objective in search of a double Giro-Tour next July.

This fifth stage also confirmed the return to the forefront of Egan Bernal, 3rd in Cari.

Two and a half years after a heavy fall in training, the Colombian, winner of the Tour in 2019, was “the best of the others”, sixteen seconds behind the winner. He occupies the same position overall, 1 min 11 behind Yates.

On the Swiss side, the best of them, Grison’s Matteo Badilatti (Q36.5), took 16th place, 1’45” behind Yates. Neuchâtel’s Alexandre Balmer (Coratec-Vini Fantini) finished 35th (at 5’37”) and a group made up of Argovians Silvan Dillier (UAE), 38th, and Jan Christen (UAE), 39th, and Jura’s Yannis Voisard ( Tudor), 41st, finished at 8’37”.

Friday promises an explosive stage. Due to the snow, the Gotthard and Furka passes cannot be crossed. The race will consist of 42 hilly kilometers starting from the Nordic Center of the Goms and Ulrichen valley, with a final, steep climb towards Blatten-Belalp.
