A blue sky, a blazing stadium, a cloud of questions and a mountain of challenges. In Budapest, nearly 50 European heads of state and government, including the President of the Confederation Viola Amherd and the new Secretary General of the Council of Europe Alain Berset, met on Thursday in the Puskas Aréna football stadium for the 5th summit of the European Political Community (EPC). In a feverish context: the election of Donald Trump, a victory that Hungarian sovereignist leader Viktor Orban particularly savors, was inevitably on everyone’s minds.

The American electoral results, and the impact that the Republican’s return to the White House could have on Europe, were also on the menu of a dinner between the leaders of the 27 EU countries on Thursday evening. Just before the informal European summit this Friday, still in the stadium erected in tribute to the legendary player Ferenc Puskas.
