Rabat – The Marrakech International Film Festival Foundation is organizing, on July 16 and 17 in Casablanca, an introductory and advanced film criticism workshop for journalists, which will be led by Charles Tesson, vice-president of the French Union of Cinema Critics and former editor-in-chief of Cahiers du cinéma.

Initiated “in line with the various actions carried out by the Marrakech International Film Festival Foundation with a view to supporting the strengthening of professional action in the cinema sector, this workshop offers to acquire specific knowledge and skills linked to the film criticism through film analysis and the practice of film criticism, whether it is the preparation of interviews or the writing of critical texts,” indicates the Foundation in a press release.

The workshop is aimed at culture and cinema journalists working in Morocco, wishing to “learn about film criticism or perfect their practice and acquire new tools to develop their skills”.

It will be hosted by a personality well known to film buffs, Charles Tesson, who was general delegate of Critics’ Week at the Cannes Film Festival, from 2012 to 2021 and previously, editor-in-chief of Cahiers du cinéma, from 1998 to 2003, specifies the same Source.

Alongside his critical activity, Charles Tesson was professor of cinema history at the Sorbonne Nouvelle University (Paris III) and he is the author of several works on cinema, including Satyajit Ray (1992), Luis Buñuel (1995), Theater and Cinema (2007), and Akira Kurosawa (2008).

The workshop program will take place over two days, the first focusing on “The critical function: History of criticism, ethics, role of criticism, critical function. What’s the point ?” and “The critical exercise: critical analysis of texts on a film”, while the second day will be dedicated to the “Screening of a feature film followed by a discussion: methodology of film analysis with a view to production of a critical text” and “Interview Methodology”, in addition to a writing workshop.

The participants in this workshop will be selected following a call for applications which will close on June 25, said the same Source, adding that candidates are invited to go to the festival website to read the participation criteria: https://marrakech-festival.com/
