Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko recently sparked a new controversy by revealing the existence of a bank account belonging to a dignitary of the former regime, with a balance of 1,000 billion CFA francs. This assertion was corroborated by several members of the government, but was firmly rejected by actors of the old regime, notably former president Macky Sall.
In a letter addressed to his supporters, the leader of the Alliance for the Republic (Apr), currently at the head of the Takku Wallu coalition, described these accusations as “grotesque” and “slanderous”. According to Macky Sall, these revelations come at a critical time, after the country’s sovereign rating had already been lowered by two evaluation agencies due to statements deemed unfounded. He stressed that the story of the alleged bank account had been denied by professionals in the banking sector, and that it had had no serious impact, neither for citizens nor for financial institutions.

The former president expressed concern about the impact of such reports on the country’s economy. He warned that such accusations risked darkening Senegal’s economic future, threatening businesses, jobs and worsening youth unemployment. Sall also pointed to the delay in resolving alleged scandals linked to the National Sanitation Office of Senegal (ONAS) and the Senegalese Rural Electrification Agency (ASER), suggesting that the management of these matters is not was not a priority for the current government.
