One of the longest railway viaducts in Switzerland should be built in the canton of Fribourg. Friborg Public Transport (TPF) will investigate the construction of a 970 meter long bridge on November 15. Costing 86 million francs, 100% financed by the Confederation via the Rail Infrastructure Fund (FAIF), it will bring Bulle closer to Romont. But unlike similar structures, located more in an urban environment, whether the Hardturmviadukt in Zurich (1126 m) or the Lorraineviadukt in Bern (1092 m), this one has the particularity of being in the countryside.

In the eyes of Serge Collaud, the general director of TPF, raising the track has multiple advantages, while the current one had to be redone anyway. “The viaduct allows us to be more direct by smoothing the curves and anticipating the significant difference in altitude at the entrance to Romont,” explains the Fribourgeois. In the end, the route will be 800 meters shorter. The director also highlights ecological reasons. “We are going to return 5,000 m2 of land,” explains Serge Collaud. Wildlife and livestock can travel under the viaduct. The removal of four level crossings gives us more security.”
