During a stay in Taghazout with her sister, Sue discovers Lucy, her leg broken in three places, wandering behind their hotel. Faced with the animal’s distress, she decides to finance an emergency surgical operation for the sum of £100. Back on the Isle of Man, Sue sends photos of Lucy to her husband, Grant, a 60-year-old retired engineer. The couple then decides to adopt the puppy, relays the newspaper The Daily Mail.

A long journey follows to repatriate Lucy. Sue first entrusts her to a Moroccan shelter, Al-Nour Tierhilfe, where she receives the necessary care and awaits the formation of antibodies essential for her journey. After eight months of waiting and arranging, Sue returns to Morocco and brings Lucy home, via Paris where she obtains a pet passport. “Once I made that commitment, I knew I couldn’t go back. I didn’t want to abandon Lucy,” says Sue.
Now 16 months old, Lucy is spending happy days on the Isle of Man alongside Sue, Grant and their two other dogs, Mr Darcy and Lola. “She is treated like a princess, and she is so happy, confident and loving,” Sue gushes. Despite a difficult past, Lucy adapted perfectly to her new life and learned to clean herself and walk on a leash in record time. “I think she knows we saved her life,” Sue concluded with emotion.
