How many times will you change employers during your career? Discover the trend in Belgium

Have you changed paths several times during your career? RH ACERTA surveyed 340,000 workers from 44,000 companies. Here is the analysis of the results of this survey.

The first observation following this study is that Belgians change on average for 4 different employers throughout their professional career. “Concretely, they will stay on average 11 years and 4 months within the same company”explains our journalist Florent Vanden Bergh on the set of RTL info 7 p.m. this Saturday, June 1.

Does the arrival of young workers on the labor market change the situation?? “This is not necessarily the case if we analyze the figures globally”, comments Florent Vanden Bergh. In 2014, the average length of service was 10 years and 11 months compared to 11 years and 4 months today. This means that Belgians stay on average 5 months longer with the same company.

Different sectors

Are there differences depending on the sector of activity? “Yes, there are more or less important differences”, continues our journalist. In the finance sector, for example, in 2014, the average seniority was 18 years: it is 26 years today. In the industrial sector, “it’s generally stable”: workers stay on average 11 years and 7 months in the same company. On the commercial side, “it’s a little bit different”underlines Florent Vanden Bergh. “We have the feeling that they are loyal a little less long since salespeople, for example, stay a month, two months with their employer than 10 years ago.”

Does the size of the company have an influence on these results? In a certain sense, yes. Let’s compare two types of companies: in a large company that has more than 500 employees, the average tenure is 15 years and 6 months to be precise. In small and medium-sized companies, the duration is between 6 and 8 years. Why such a difference? “In large companies, we are more likely to be able to develop professionally. We have more means of reorienting ourselves within the company itself”analyzes our journalist. “As for small SMEs, this requires more flexibility. Everything evolves more quickly. Therefore, greater capacity for adaptation is required on the part of the employee.”
