The warning sirens sounded in Rive-de-Gier (). Exceptional floods are underway on the Gier river, placed on red alert by Météo .

The city has been on flood alert since this morning, Thursday October 17.

“Centennial flood in Rive-de-Gier,” explains Vincent Bony, the town’s mayor, in a video. Of the power cuts are in progress, linked to the Gier flood.

This flood is historic, exceeding the reference ones of 2014 and 2008.

The children remain in their schools, colleges, high schools and nurseries, supervised by educational and municipal staff.

The Gier river passed over the A47 motorway, which was cut between Saint-Étienne and . The SNCF line between the cities is also interrupted.

In critical sectors of the department, the water level and flow of the Gier at Rive-de-Gier or Givors are no longer increasing and have been stagnating for a few minutes now.
In terms of precipitation, we are also observing a relative calm this afternoon which could be short-lived, with the probable return of heavy stormy precipitation by the end of the day/early evening.
Further upstream, on the Haute-Loire, the water level continues to increase on the Loire. The flood wave is located on the Monistrol-sur-Loire side and should arrive within a few hours at the Grangent dam.
Vigicrues forecasts envisage a rapid rise in the waters of the Loire in the Forez plain sector, with a peak close to the flood of December 2, 2003, around 1 a.m.
Caution therefore remains in order.
