In the United States, 11 members of the same family lost their lives during Hurricane Helene in Fairview, North Carolina. More than 100 deaths have been recorded in this state in the southeast of the country, CNN reported this Friday. A mudslide crossed the area where the Craig family lived, nicknamed “Craigtown”, details ABC 11. Several houses were destroyed and their occupants killed.

Family members who survived watched helplessly as the devastation caused by the weather, ABC 13 reports. “My mother and father, my aunt and uncle, my great-aunt and great-uncle – I lost cousins, second cousins,” Jesse Craig said. “You know, this is our community and our city. I don’t know… I don’t know if it will ever be the same,” added his wife, MeKenzie.

“Loving people”

A relative described the Craigs as “a pillar of the community,” explaining that “They would do anything for you […] They were loving people.” The family members who remained in the region are now working on rebuilding the place. A friend said they were planning to build a memorial with debris salvaged from storm-ravaged homes.

The Craigs had lived in Fairview for eight decades. Jesse’s grandfather bought land in the mid-1900s. Relatives of the family launched an online fundraiser on the GoFundMe site to provide financial support for the reconstruction, but also for the organization of the funeral and the medical expenses. 250,000 dollars, or around 230,000 euros, were collected this Tuesday.
