Fatal accident on the A19: the driver caused another the same morning

In less than thirty minutes, Jana D. caused two accidents, including one fatal, on the A19 on Saturday morning. This 25-year-old young woman, suffering from psychological problems and under the influence of drugs, deliberately crashed into a family car. Placed under surveillance in hospital, she is being prosecuted for homicide and attempted homicide.

Jana D., 25, caused two serious accidents in the space of thirty minutes on Saturday morning. The first took place at 8:30 a.m. near her home in Menen, when she went to the bakery barefoot and in her pajamas. Shortly after, it headed towards the A19, where it caused a fatal accident. After driving in the right direction, she became a ghost driver by going the wrong way on the highway, violently hitting a Citroën C3 with a family on board.

According to the prosecutor, Jana D. intentionally caused the collision, which is confirmed by the testimonies and conclusions of the experts. The victim’s car, driven by Mario Laurier, was thrown 30 meters. Witnesses saw the young woman, injured, try to flee, but she was quickly arrested by the police. Transported to the Jan Yperman hospital in Ypres, she has since been under surveillance.

Jana D. was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, but had consumed hard drugs and taken medication for her ADHD. The day before the tragedy, she admitted before the Kortrijk police court that she occasionally used cocaine. She was on trial there for drunk driving last March.

An investigation is underway to clarify the psychological problems from which Jana D. has suffered for years. Still hospitalized, she was taken into custody for homicide and attempted homicide, and is due to appear Friday.
