  • Two-thirds of Gaza structures damaged or destroyed, UN satellite center says

  • Palestinians fear the worst is yet to come

  • For “afterwards”, some plead for Gaza to be placed under provisional UN administration

On October 7, 2023, Fadel al-Otol had a meeting with his students. This involved starting the 3D modeling of the fabulous archaeological site recently unearthed. A pure marvel: a Roman necropolis, 2000 years old, housing dozens of tombs, including lead coffins decorated with dolphins or bunches of grapes, perfectly preserved. But from 6:30 a.m., the noise announces that this day will not be like any other. “Rockets were flying in all directions. I asked everyone to go home, and I went to pick up my children from school. » At school, his five children never returned, except to shelter from the bombs. A year later, there are no more schools in Gaza.

Fadel al-Otol and his family are still in the devastated strip of land. This 43-year-old archaeologist, who completed part of his training in Geneva, knows full well what the development of Gaza’s heritage represents. “These discoveries show that this territory has been populated for millennia. This fundamentally contradicts the Israeli idea that Palestine has been a land without a people.”
