POLITICS – In May, do what you please. In June, participates in the ballot. As the campaign enters a new stage, with the presentation of the different lists and the first debate which will pit all the leaders against each other this Sunday, May 5 at noon on RTL, the French continue to shy away from the European elections. At least, for half of them.

According to a survey conducted by YouGov for HuffPost, 49% of those questioned admitted that they were not interested in the current electoral race. A form of skepticism significantly stronger among 34-55 year olds (58% disinterested), than among young people (44%) or older people (46%).

Overall, however, the share of French people interested in the June 9 vote increased by 2 points: it stood at 47% in May, compared to 45% in April. A simmering trend. And what confirms the hopes of those who want to see the lines move at the last moment?

New campaign stages

In any case, it is clear that the candidates are speeding up the pace with just over a month to go before the vote. A few days after Jordan Bardella, the big favorite, the presidential camp made public the 29 names accompanying its candidate Valérie Hayer. From now on, all the protagonists (those who can be elected) are known.

If some have not yet presented their program – that of the Macronists is expected on Monday – the different heads of the list will increase the number of public meetings and debates to compare their visions of Europe. After the one organized this Sunday in “the Grand Jury” (RTL-Le Figaro-M6-Paris Première), will follow the same exercises on LCI, BFMTV, CNews and Europe 1 or even France 2.

So many opportunities for Jordan Bardella, Valérie Hayer, Raphaël Glucksmann (PS-PP), Manon Aubry (LFI), François-Xavier Bellamy (LR), Marion Maréchal (Reconquête) or Marie Toussaint (EELV) to convince the French of good -foundation of their projects. And the importance of going to the polls on June 9.

Another interesting figure: according to the survey conducted by YouGov for HuffPost61% of French people believe that the European elections are “ important for France “. A figure down four points compared to the previous month. And the sign, here, that the candidates can do better.

This survey was carried out on 1,001 people representative of the French national population aged 18 and over. The survey was carried out online, on the YouGov France proprietary panel, from 29 April to May 2, 2024.
