European Elections 2024

“Fascisti fora” : this is one of the Corsican expressions that Eric Zemmour heard this Saturday, May 4 at the end of the morning. While he was walking in a market in Ajaccio before a Reconquête meeting as part of the European elections, the president of Reconquête received an egg on the head and was the target of numerous insults.

Welcomed by a group of opponents

Warmly welcomed on some stalls, the far-right activist was encouraged to look elsewhere on others. But he was mainly awaited there by a “welcome committee” compound “about fifteen left-wing activists”according to the local daily Corsica-Morningwho posted videos of the altercations. “Cleared”, a woman shouts at him, “the fascists outside“, chants an activist in Corsican. People have also called him a “facho” and shouted to him “leave here !”, according to the testimony of an AFP photographer on site.

A woman also crushed an egg on Eric Zemmour’s head. “There were jets of water and throwing of eggs and a woman tried to push him”a police Source told AFP, specifying that “The incident was very brief.” On a video of Corsica-Morning, we see the leader of the far-right party react by striking this woman, even though her security forces had controlled her. A gesture described as “pure reflex of self-defense” by Eric Zemmour’s entourage. “It comes behind his back, he doesn’t know who it is, if it’s an egg, a fist, a knife, he gets away”pleaded with those around him to the AFP, assuring that they intended to file a complaint: “At no time did he want to hit this woman.” In July 2022, the man who crushed an egg on Eric Zemmour’s head during the presidential campaign was sentenced by the courts to a fine of 500 euros, suspended.

An investigation into “meeting violence with weapons” has been opened, Ajaccio prosecutor Nicolas Septe told AFP: “The investigations were entrusted to the DIPN (Interdepartmental Directorate of the Police) which must determine who are the people who attacked Mr. Zemmour”.

The prosecutor adds that“another physical altercation would have occurred” after the egg throwing and the insults, “in circumstances which remain to be clarified”. “The findings of the police, the use of the various videos already seized and the collection of testimonies will aim in particular to identify all of the people involved and clarify the circumstances and context of the facts”, specifies the magistrate. No complaint has yet been filed concerning the blow allegedly given by Eric Zemmour to the woman.
