“Belgium will support all efforts towards a two-state solution,” recalls the head of Belgian diplomacy, Bernard Quintin. The agreement announced this Wednesday provides for a first phase of truce of 42 days, which will begin on Sunday. During this period, the Israeli army must withdraw to the east, away from populated areas.

“Israeli forces will then be positioned along the Gaza border, which will allow the exchange of prisoners, as well as the exchange of bodies and the return of displaced people to their residences,” said Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed ben Abdelrahmane. During the first phase, 33 Israeli hostages are to be released.

“After too long months of conflict, we feel immense relief for the hostages, for their families and for the people of Gaza,” wrote De Croo. “Let us hope that this ceasefire will put an end to the fighting and mark the beginning of a lasting peace. Belgium is ready to contribute to this.”
