“I think I would like to write for Pierre Garnier”

Always with the idea of highlighting the new talents who will make French song by hand, M Radio and Ombeline Brumain had the pleasure of welcoming Emma Peters for an interview “One to one”with a fairly light atmosphere, a lot of frankness, humor and sensitivity.

For those who don't know her, Emma Peters is a 28 year old artist at the same time author, composer, performer, who made herself know thanks to covers published on the Internet. Covers in which she often revisited French rap songsbefore considerably expanding its catalog and then finally, create your own songs. While she hasreleased his second album “Tout de suite” a few months agoshe is in concert this December 4 at the Olympiabut she wanted to make a quick stop by our studios to answer Ombeline's questions.

Questions which obviously focused on his journey, starting at the beginning: childhood. A visibly quite rural childhood:

I grew up on a farm in Picardy with my parents, my little sisters and my little brother, dogs, cats, a horse, chickens. In the middle of nature! I did cabins until very late (laughs)

It was difficult for her, at first, to think about a career in music or even to dream of it. But life is full of surprises:

I come from a background where no one does this job officially. We always sang as a family but it was more of a hobby, it didn't exist at home. My mother always told me “you need a background, to study”, so I followed the classic route until my YouTube replays took me a little too far and I was forced to 'stop working. I only dared to say very late that this is what I wanted to do with my life.

When asked to describe his musical style, the answer is direct, but also very funny:

JI did ten years of classical guitar, I'm a fan of French rap, and of Véronique Sanson. You mix all that, and that makes my musical style (laughs).

[…] My mother was a huge fan of Véronique Sanson when I was young, so I listened a lot. Then When I reached adolescence I told myself that it was “too much crap”and when I returned to I rediscovered and downloaded everything, I find it super feminist, avant-garde, modern, I find it super strong. Unfortunately, every time I meet her during certain shows, I'm so shy that I never go to her dressing room to say hello. So I see it. I would love to do a duet with her, but I'm such a fan that I have something blocking me…

Obviously, like all people in her age group, the singer is a big television consumer, with a very pronounced interest in Star Academy, and reality in general:

My favorite show at the moment is Star Academy. Already, I'm a fan of reality TV, so the Marseillais, the Ch'tis (laughs), the Princes of Love, I watch everything. The return of Star Ac, for me, was incredible. I have a slight preference for Marguerite this year. She's got something, and she looks really funny.

The young singer also delivered about this new album, “Tout de suite”released in June and therefore the design was done quite quickly, because it had a lot of things to externalize:

It's an album I wrote right after my second tour. A lot had happened for me, I had discovered the scene, I had come out of my room, I had met a lot of people and I needed to freeze everything that happened to me and tell all that, a kind of urgency to share that with people. Hence the title of the album, which is called “Tout de suite”.

If the atmosphere may seem light during the interview, that does not prevent Emma Peters from knowing how to tackle very serious subjects, such as that of mental health which she talks about in particular in “Juliette”:

Juliette is someone who is very close to me, whom I love very much and who is schizophrenic and paranoid. I always wanted to talk about mental health in my songs, I didn't really know how to do it and finally, the solution was there before my eyes. SO I dedicate this song to her, and thanks to her I can talk about this subject which seems essential to me.

Obviously, the talent of the singer and composer was quickly noticed in the music industry. And it didn't take long for her to be approached by the teams of… Kendji Girac! She even wrote a song on her latest album:

I wrote for Kendji Girac on his last album. This is the very first time I wrote for someone elsebecause as I tell myself that I have a fairly intimate way of writing and composing, I would not be able to write for others. I've been asked a lot and I've always said no. And there, I was called by Kendji's manager who said to me 'listen, Kendji really likes your music, we're working on a new album, are you interested in working with us. And then, well, you can't say no. But I went there with enormous stress. Finally, the flow passed very quickly. Afterwards, I was very relieved that he had picked up my pieces, and above all I was super moved to hear him sing my text and my melody.

And when we ask her if she has other desires in terms of collaborations with other French artists, again the answer comes quite quickly: “I think I would like to write for Pierre Garnier. I’m waiting for someone to order me (laughs)”.

We wish him all the best! The entire podcast can be accessed by clicking on this link.
