Most romantic romance novels revolve around a couple, generally made up of a savior male character and a fragile heroine. But none of this in the third season of the Chronicle of the Bridgertons : Penelope Featherington, played by the brilliant Nicola Coughlanis in no way looking for a hero, as Colin Bridgerton learns, the character played by Luke Newton, during the first shady days of their marriage. “His upbringing within the Bridgerton family, and the absence of a father figure for a certain number of years, all of this produced in him a different, even strange, conception of the role of man within a family, explains Luke Newton, during the podcast Vanity Fair dedicated to series, Still Watching. His meeting with Penelope allows him to put his ideas back in place. He learns that his presence, his support is enough, that he does not need to protect or save her. She is a strong and independent woman. She has already faced the pressures of the London society of her time, and she is a very successful woman. »

In the last four episodes of the third season, Colin discovers that his future wife is also the one hiding under the identity of Lady Whistledown, the very one he had sworn to destroy, but they end up all the same by getting married and, after a rather turbulent period, they both find their feet in this relationship. “The truth is, I envied you,” Colin tells Penelope shortly after she unmasks herself in front of everyone, “and now I just can’t believe I’m loved by a woman.” so courageous. If my only goal in life is to love a woman as wonderful as you, then I would be a very fulfilled man. »

Luke Newton explains that he and Nicola Coughlan watched this scene together during their worldwide promotional tour: “It was very emotional, because it’s the moment when Colin realizes who she really is. She has compartmentalized the two universes, while the two facets of her personality, once united, make her a truly extraordinary person, perfect for him. This is a very nice conclusion. »

Below, Luke Newton tells us the inside story of season 3: its highly anticipated finale, how Luke gets rid of his savior complex, and his hopes for the fourth season of The Bridgerton Chronicles.

In just four episodes, Colin discovers Lady Whistledown’s true identity, gets married, has a child and publishes a novel. What was your reaction when you discovered the storyline for the second half of the season?
Luke Newton. When we reached the end of the first part, I was happy to see that Colin was engaged, happy, that he hoped to live peacefully for the rest of his days. Of course, there was still the secret of Whistledown’s identity in the background, but I was hoping we’d get a moment’s respite. But the calm is short-lived actually, as he immediately begins to sense that something is wrong.
