Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: Italian master Vittorio De Sica signs a classic of Italian cinema.

Want an evening with great Italian cinema? So, we tune in to Arte to discover the moving Garden of the Finzi-Contini, one of the masterpieces of the golden age of transalpine cinema. Directed by the great Vittorio De Sica, this adaptation of the novel by Giorgio Bassani, released in theaters in 1971, will definitely leave an impression on you.

Considered one of the fathers of neorealism, Vittorio De Sicawho here reunites with his faithful screenwriter Cesare Zavattini (with whom he notably signed The Bicycle Thief and Miracle in Milan), signs with The Finzi-Contini Garden a melancholy work which oscillates between gravity and emotion. Unforgettable.

The Finzi-Contini Garden immerses the viewer in Italy in 1938, when fascist ideology insidiously permeates the country’s morals, and focuses on the relationships of a group of young people from the Jewish bourgeoisie. This is how Giorgio (Lino Capolicchio) has the opportunity to see his childhood friend again, Micol (Dominique Sanda), his first and eternal love.

A Golden Bear and an Oscar for a cinema classic

Carried by remarkable distribution, The Finzi-Contini Garden, of great power and great accuracy, is overwhelming. This wonderfully staged and visually sublime historical melodrama is a heartbreaking human tragedy you won’t forget. Very logically, this timeless feature film was acclaimed by both the press and spectators, who gave it the flattering scores of 4.8 out of 5 and 4 out of 5 respectively.

Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and Oscar for Best International Film, The Finzi-Contini Garden is a little classic of the seventh art. Don’t miss the opportunity to find out.

Tonight on Arte at 8:55 p.m.
