In a recent interview with Kerrang! magazine, Avenged Sevenfold frontman Mr. Shadows shared his thoughts on Metallica’s enduring legacy and the challenges his own band faced when making the first part of Thrash Metal legends. His thoughts paint an eloquent picture of the Metal scene and the evolution of both bands.

Mr. Shadows, real name Matt Sanders, praised Metallica for its authentic approach to aging in the music industry. “I think Metallica has aged really well. They seem like guys who do what they want.”, did he declare. Shadows noted that a few years ago, Metallica’s performances seemed more forced, attributing this to “growing pains.” He praised the band’s current state, pointing to James Hetfield’s pre-show cigar and Lars Ulrich’s unwavering personality as symbols of their authenticity. “They’re not looking to fill their face with Botox. It’s just guys getting older and playing thrash. I think there’s something really human and cool about that”he added.

Reflecting on Avenged Sevenfold’s experience opening for Metallica on their 2017 WorldWired tour, Shadows described it as both a challenge and an opportunity. He recalled the discomfort of performing in broad daylight as an opening band, with half-filled venues and skeptical audiences. “We almost have to go to war”he said, describing the feeling of trying to win over Metallica’s devoted fans.

Initially hesitant to open for Metallica, Shadows explained that the band had only headlined for years and that he feared being seen as “second fiddle.” Despite these concerns, they ultimately accepted the offer, recognizing the visibility and prestige it brought them. “We would have been idiots not to do it”Shadows admitted, while acknowledging the mixed feelings that accompanied the decision.

Avenged Sevenfold continues to thrive with their latest album, Life Is But A Dream…, which was released in June 2023 via Warner Bros.
