Died in 1980 at the age of 41, Joe Dassin left behind a horde of inconsolable fans, but also and above all two devastated sons. More than forty after the artist’s death, these two boys named Jonathan and Julien have grown up and are now discreet men. Guest on the set of the show “Jordan’s”this Thursday, October 31, 2024, Jonathan Dassin signed a rare interview. The opportunity for him to reveal how much his father’s music brings him each month…
Death of Joe Dassin: an iconic singer who left too soon
Born on November 5, 1938 in New York, Joe Dassin is one of the most emblematic singers of French song. His career, although tragically cut short by his untimely death in 1980left an indelible mark on the French-speaking musical landscape. With his catchy melodies and touching lyrics, he has captured the hearts of a large audience, both in France and internationally.
The son of a Jewish American father and a French mother, Joe Dassin grew up in a multicultural environment. His passion for music was revealed very early, and after studying sociology, he decided to devote himself to singing. In 1965, he released his first big success, “The Champs-Élysées”, which is quickly becoming a classic. This title, accompanied by a catchy melody, captures the Parisian spirit and makes him an essential figure in popular song.
Very quickly, the artist distinguished himself by his warm voice and his varied musical style. He then oscillates between French song, pop, and even American influences, which allows him to reach a wide audience. His texts, often imbued with nostalgia and romanticism, evoke universal themes such as love, daily life and childhood memories.
Among his greatest hits, we find emblematic titles like “L’Été indienne”, “La Fleur aux dents” and “Whistling on the hill”. These songs, both poetic and accessible, continue to be sung and appreciated by entire generations today.
Unfortunately, Joe Dassin’s career was abruptly cut short when he died on August 20, 1980, at the age of 41, of a heart attack. His death leaves a huge void in the world of music and sparks a wave of emotion among his fans.
A colossal legacy left to his sons
Joe Dassin left behind him, Jonathan and Julien, both born from his union with Christine Delvaux. When the singer died, the eldest Jonathan was two years old while Julien was only six months old. Today, they are respectively 45 and 43 years old and continue to honor the memory of their father. Rather discreet, they nevertheless wrote a book in 2000, in which they paid tribute to their famous father.
And this Thursday, October 31, 2024, Jonathan Dassin was, against all expectations, on the show “Chez Jordan”, presented by Jordan De Luxe. The man did not fail to talk about his father’s life and also made revelations about the legacy left by his father.
“We can imagine that because with the titles… Afterwards, there are very technical questions. My father was not the songwriter of all his songs” he first declared. Jonathan Dassin then admitted to “living very well” from his father’s legacya monthly pension paid by SACEM.
“That’s about it.” said Jonathan Dassin when Jordan De Luxe asked him if the amount amounted to “more than 10,000 euros”. Add to that “one million euros each” at the time of Joe Dassin’s death. “When we sold the house, we were each able to buy a house and an apartment.” he also clarified.
